Canadian Citizenship

For many newcomers, the immigration journey begins with securing the appropriate visa to live, work, or study in Canada. As individuals and families settle and build their lives in the country, the next major milestone is often obtaining permanent residency and eventually applying for Canadian citizenship.

Steps Toward Citizenship

Canadian citizenship offers long-term security, expanded rights, and the opportunity to fully participate in the country’s civic and social life. To qualify, applicants must meet several requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

To apply for Canadian citizenship, you generally must:

  • Hold permanent resident status in Canada.

  • Have physically lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years before applying.

  • Have filed income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period, if required under Canadian law.

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate in English or French.

  • Pass the Canadian citizenship test, which evaluates knowledge of Canadian history, laws, government, symbols, geography, and values.

  • Have no prohibitions related to criminal activity in Canada or abroad that would prevent citizenship eligibility.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you may be invited to complete the citizenship test and an interview to confirm language ability and verify application details. Successful applicants are then invited to participate in the citizenship ceremony, where they take the Oath of Citizenship and officially become Canadian citizens.
